Teaching Models

The Federal Ministry for Education and Cultural Affairs and the Federal Sports Organisation have agreed within the framework of the "School and Sport" commission jointly to reach an improvement School and Sports Club Cooperation. That way there can be brought about:

  • A rise in daily physical activity time for 6 to 10 year olds;
  • The conception and formation of physical education oriented, health conscious and environmentally responsible lifestyle. A promotion of lifelong readiness to be active;
  • A reciprocal completion and optimisation of school and club opportunities (creation of synergies).

There is joint teaching by a primary school teacher and club activity leader in a class with limited hours (8-10 hours). All materials, stimuli and documents are available. All activities are in the spirit of furthering internal school education. In these teaching hours the children's interest should be awakened for a variety of physical activities and types of sport through a broad opportunity for play. These hours are therefore not to be considered as "special training" for one type of sport!

After this phase there follows an extension of multisports opportunity in the context of voluntary activity and the creation of simplified club access possibilities. The establishment of voluntary activity sessions is provided for under the joint charge of teacher and activity leader with a pinpoint programme of physical activity opportunities rich in both quality and quantity.
Depending on the opportunities that the cooperating club can offer it should be made possible to experience the joy of extensive activity, to help children with little experience of activity and to offer participation in development competitions for those who seek performance comparisons in competition.

With extension, this consideration can be taken up at the higher secondary level. It is the wish of this nationwide campaign to create a network of school physical education and out-of-school activity.
Young people should be able to find out whether physical activity has a meaning for them and to experience that it is important - beyond their school career too - to integrate physical activity into their lifestyles.

It is therefore important for schools to find partners: these partners should help to supplement and to multiply what the school can offer. They should make it possible for pupils whilst they are still at school to spend their leisure time meaningfully pursuing the sports that they take to. Partners are in particular sports clubs.

It is especially gratifying that all umbrella organisations who are members of the national sport organisation participate. Another partner is the Austrian Olympic Committee which is for the first time supporting a campaign in schools. Through "INFO-TOWER" pupils are made aware of opportunities for physical activity which exist around their school. They find out where they can have the opportunity to participate in sport and to find out about specific sports. They will perhaps find a sports club that they would like to join beyond school.

Models of Cooperation in Schoolsport

On of the most significant areas of cooperation with respect to competition-oriented sport participation are schoolsport competitions. For many years successful cooperation has existed between national sport federations, sponsors and school authorities e.g. Schülerliga (school league) football and volleyball, Arbeitskreis (working group) school basketball, Arbeitsgemeinschaft (study group) school handball or the Schools Olympics with the cooperation of the Austrian Olympic Committee.

This cooperation is characterised by:

  • joint organisational and financial running of schoolsport competitions from local through provincial to national levels;
  • equipment campaigns;
  • further education measures, creation of temporary teacher and referee courses;
  • coaching campaigns: federation coaches come in to schools;
  • contacts with elite athletes: elite athletes come in to schools or look after school teams at competitions;
  • employment of federation judges and referees in schoolsport competitions;
  • opening of federation competitions to school teams (without club or federation membership);
  • financial and logistic support from club foundations in the school locality;
  • working out programs for electronic results calculation appropriate to school competition specific conditions (always team results!).
